Once the original church was completed, Fr. John Baptist Broun set his sights on establishing a school, and in the fall of 1863, classes began in the church’s basement. The school of 35 students and one teacher rapidly outgrew its small surroundings and Broun purchased the entire block of lots situated on the west side of Broadway Street between Center and State Streets, paying the sum of $9,000. The cornerstone for the new school was laid in August 1887 and was completed in 1890. The total cost of the school was $61,000, and when it opened, over 400 students were enrolled. Until the day it closed in 1977, the school never charged tuition. In the 1930s, the building was completely renovated, and the spire, roof, and third floor were removed as they were determined to be structurally unsound.
